PCS SI Update - July 17, 2025 - Using SitLead to Assess Teacher Readiness
I hope all is well in your world, whether it's on vacation, on a PL Trip, or busy at school planning for success.
I wanted to share some thoughts about how we can utilize SitLead to design support for teachers in "Levels of Support". I'm playing with that phrase rather than Tiers, because Tiers can have some negative connotations. Levels of Support utilizing SitLead also embeds the idea that "for this task" this is the level of support. We are assessing the current performance rather than the human and the human can grow and the levels of support can shift.Using SitLead allows us to assess where each teacher is on specific task at different levels. I'm currently thinking there are 3 levels of Task to consider. First, is the task of "Positively impacting student achievement". That is a BROAD task and normally we aim for specific, targeted task, but for our purpose, I think this first task is appropriate. It's what each teacher is assessed on when it comes to EVAAS.
Within that task are two embedded task that allow teachers to meet the first task: 1) Management & Relationships and 2) Rigor & Engagement. This breaks down the two major requirements teachers need to master to positively impact student achievement. Still we need more specifics to work with a teacher, especially a beginning or under performing teacher (R1/R2). This is where the Scope and Sequence can help clarify the specific task within each of those task.
For example, Mr Proctor could be assessed as R1 overall for Positively Impacting Student Achievement. This rating would impact how often the admin team works with him, the curriculum or behavior support he may need, the types and frequency of the Focused Feedback and Follow-up conversations.
Within that overall R1, Mr. Proctor could be R3 in Rigor and Engagement and R1 in Management. It's the management that is having the biggest impact on impacting student achievement. This allows the admin team to both acknowledge his ability to plan and teach and the need for support with regards to Management. Using the Rigor & Engagement Scope and Sequence, Mr. Proctor may be currently performing at a solid #7, meaning he is regularly using Discourse strategies like Numbered Heads and Collaborative Pairs and is working on the Phase 3 activities of #8 Activating Knowledge.
However, when it comes to Management, he struggles when giving directions, correcting himself as he speaks and student often have to ask 2-3 questions to clarify what to do. He said he has yet to feel "comfortable" in front of class. He is struggling at #2 Confident Presence and #3 What to do in giving student clear, concise directions. It's this R1 task that is having the most impact on positively impacting student achievement and where the admin team needs to focus support. As an admin team, we would focus first on having him demonstrate a #2 Confident Presence and once he does that, we would work on helping him script and practice giving bite-sized, clear, directions #3 What to Do.
I have a draft visual below on the Levels of SitLead Task to consider and the links to the Scope and Sequence. Please keep giving me feedback and making suggestions to the Scope and Sequence Google Docs.
